Direct answer

How do I increase a survey’s response rate?

Send the survey close to the experience being rated, keep the questionnaire short — five to seven questions —, use the channel your audience already lives in, and schedule a single reminder a few days later. Tell people in the invitation how long it takes and what will happen with their answer. Incentives lift participation with cold audiences but change who responds. And always measure the rate with one consistent definition, such as the AAPOR standards, so periods compare honestly.

An invitation that converts

A four-question post-support survey sent by WhatsApp within the first hour, with a single next-day reminder, tends to beat the same survey sent by email days later with twelve questions — without changing who gets invited.

Practical lab

Understand it in a few minutes

  1. 01

Short surveys sent right after the experience convert more complete responses.

  2. 02

A single, polite reminder recovers part of the silent group; excess drives opt-outs.

  3. 03

A high rate with a biased sample is worth less than an average rate with a representative one.

How we reached this result

The recommendations follow AAPOR standardized response-rate definitions and the Pew Research Center guidelines on writing survey questions. Nothing here guarantees a specific rate: channel, audience, and topic weigh more than any technique.

What this calculation does not show

Raising the response rate reduces nonresponse bias risk but does not eliminate it: responders can still differ from those who ignore the invitation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good survey response rate?

It depends on channel and relationship: internal surveys exceed 50%, post-support surveys of active customers often land between 10% and 30%, and cold email sits below that. What matters is comparing your own rate across periods with the same definition.

Are incentives worth it?

They can lift participation, but they attract different profiles and can bias the sample. If you use them, prefer small universal incentives and keep the same rule in every wave.

How many reminders should I send?

One, at most two, spaced a few days apart and worded as an invitation. Beyond that the gain is small and the risk of opt-outs and rushed answers grows.

Does a high response rate guarantee a representative sample?

No. It reduces nonresponse-bias risk, but responders can still differ from those who ignore you. Compare the responder profile against the invited base.
